The BA General Studies degree at UKZN requires applicants to have a National Senior Certificate (NSC) for degree studies (Bachelor’s pass), with a minimum of seven subjects, and at least four subjects (passed at level 4) from the designated list of NSC subjects. [1]
The designated subjects include Accounting, Agricultural Sciences, Business Studies, Consumer Studies, Dramatic Arts, Economics, Engineering Graphics and Design, Geography, History, Information Technology, Languages (HL, FAL, SAL + unofficial languages), Life Sciences, Mathematics, Mathematical Literacy, Music, Physical Sciences, Religion Studies, and Visual Arts. [1]
Applicants must have at least a level 4 pass in English Home Language or First Additional Language, as the medium of tuition is English. In addition, a level 4 pass in Life Orientation is required, but the Life Orientation mark is not included in the Admission Point Score (APS) calculation. [4]
Selection is competitive: meeting the minimum entrance requirements does not guarantee admission as places are limited and the best qualified applicants are chosen first. [1]
For those who have non-South African school-leaving certificates, certification from the South African Matriculation Board or Universities South Africa (USAF) confirming equivalence is necessary. [4]
Curriculum-wise, students must complete a total of 384 credits over three years, which includes at least 192 credits from two major subjects. Each major subject requires 32 credits at the first and second levels and 64 credits at the third level. Modules must be selected to ensure at least 16 credits are earned in each of at least four different subjects. Moreover, all BA General Studies students must register for isiZulu (16 credits), except for those who studied Zulu in matric, who are exempted. [6]
