Chevening Scholarship Requirements

The Chevening Scholarship is awarded to individuals who meet a specific set of requirements designed to select candidates with strong academic backgrounds, leadership potential, and a clear commitment to making a positive impact in their home country after studies in the UK[1].

  • Citizenship: You must be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country or territory (over 160 countries worldwide)[1].
  • Undergraduate Degree: You must hold an undergraduate degree that will enable you to gain entry onto a postgraduate programme at a UK university. This is typically equivalent to a UK upper second-class 2:1 honours degree[1].
  • Work Experience: A minimum of two years (2,800 hours) of work experience is required. This experience can be full-time, part-time, voluntary, or paid and must be documented as part of your application[1][4]. You can combine multiple part-time jobs to meet the requirement, but work experience gained as part of mandatory degree or course requirements is not counted[4].
  • University Applications: You must apply to three eligible UK master’s programmes (full-time, one-year taught courses) and have received an unconditional offer from at least one of these courses[1][3].
  • Return Requirement: You must agree to return to your country of citizenship for at least two years after completing your studies[1].
  • Ineligible Applicants: You are not eligible if you hold British or dual British citizenship (with specific exceptions), have held refugee status in a non-Chevening eligible country, have previously studied in the UK with funding from a UK government scholarship, or are an employee (or relative of an employee) of certain UK government departments or Chevening partner organisations[3].
  • English Language Requirement: Since 2020, Chevening has removed the requirement to submit proof of English proficiency; however, you must still meet the English language requirements set by the universities to which you apply[2].

Additional documentation you’ll need for the application includes a valid passport, undergraduate degree certificates and transcripts, two references, a well-structured CV, and, if shortlisted, proof of meeting the work experience requirement[1].
