Afda Courses And Requirements

AFDA (The South African School of Motion Picture Medium and Live Performance) offers a variety of higher education courses in the creative arts, including film, live performance, business innovation, and broadcasting.[1]

Courses Offered by AFDA:

  • Higher Certificate in Film, Television & Entertainment Production – 1 year, full time; available at all campuses. Focuses on basic technical and production skills required for film and television, with streams in technical and production/art department.[1][3]
  • Higher Certificate in Radio & Podcasting – 1 year, full time; offered in Johannesburg and Cape Town.[1]
  • Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Motion Picture Medium – 3 years, full time; offered at Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth, and Botswana campuses.[1]
  • Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Live Performance – 3 years, full time; offered at multiple campuses.[1]
  • Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) in Business Innovation & Entrepreneurship – 3 years, full time; available at several campuses.[1]
  • BA Honours in Motion Picture Medium or Live Performance – 1 year, full time postgraduate programs.[1]
  • Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Motion Picture Medium – 2 years, part time.[1]

General Admission Requirements:

  • Higher Certificate Programmes:

    • National Senior Certificate (South African Grade 12/Matric) with entry into a Diploma or Higher Certificate.[6]
    • Without these, candidates may take the AFDA Entrance Exam.[6]
  • Undergraduate Bachelor’s Degrees (BA/BCOM):

    • National Senior Certificate (Matric) with entry into a Bachelor’s degree.[2][6]
    • Completion of the AFDA Higher Certificate course enables entry.[2][6]
    • National Certificate (Vocational, NQF level 4) with three fundamental subjects (including English) above 60% and four vocational subjects above 70%.[6]
    • Technical N5 certificate with four subjects on N5 level, including Maths and English.[6]
    • Alternatives include the ACE School of Tomorrow Certificate or progress in accredited NQF level 6/7 programs.[2]
    • Candidates without matric exemption aged 23+ may apply for exemption or take the Entrance Exam.[2]
  • Postgraduate Honours Degrees:

  • Master of Fine Arts:

    • Applicants must hold an appropriate undergraduate or honours qualification and show relevant industry or artistic experience.[1]
  • International Students:

  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):

    • Candidates with alternate qualifications or relevant experience may apply through RPL and, where necessary, an entrance exam.[2][4]
