Dutch Passport Photo Requirements

The following are the official photo requirements for a Dutch passport:

  • Photo size: 35 mm x 45 mm (width x height)[1][5][7].
  • Quantity: Two photos are required per application[1].
  • Background: Light grey, pale blue, or white background; the background must be even, without shadow or color gradients[1][2][5].
  • Face width (excluding ears): Between 16 mm and 20 mm[1][2][4][5][7].
  • Face length (chin to crown):
    • Age 11 and above: 26–30 mm
    • Under age 11: 19–30 mm

  • Minimum photo resolution: 400 dpi[1][5][7].
  • Quality: Colour photo, recent (no more than six months old), sharp, with sufficient contrast and detail, undamaged, unaltered by computer software, and printed on high-quality, smooth photo paper[5][7].
  • Position and framing: Head must be fully visible, centred, not tilted, and facing forward; eyes should be on a horizontal line, and shoulders straight[1][7].
  • Expression: Neutral facial expression with mouth closed, eyes open and looking straight at the camera[1][5][7].
  • Lighting: Uniform lighting, no shadows on face or background, no reflections on face or caused by accessories[1][7].
  • Glasses: Fully transparent lenses only, with no shadow or reflection, no tinted lenses[1][5].
  • Head coverings: Not permitted unless worn for religious or medical reasons; must be plain and a single color[1][5].
  • Other allowances: Beards, wigs, different hair styles, make-up, facial piercings and tattoos, and earrings are allowed as long as the facial features are fully visible[5].
  • Children and babies: For children under six, more lenient rules apply, but the eyes must be open[1]. For children under 11, the face can be between 19–30 mm from chin to crown[1][5].
